In the lead-up to Edo State’s upcoming gubernatorial election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) through Justice Development and Peace Center, Benin (JDPC Benin) has been leading a concerted effort to educate and sensitize voters in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. Through a series of targeted campaigns and outreach programs, the organization has been working tirelessly to equip citizens with the knowledge and tools necessary to exercise their democratic rights effectively.
JDPC Benin voter’s education and sensitization initiative in Benin City has been a multi-pronged approach, addressing a wide range of issues that are crucial to the electoral process. The organization took the campaign through various streets and strategic locations throughout the city, including major markets, transportation hubs, and community centers, to reach a diverse population of the electorate.
“Our goal is to empower the people of Benin City with the knowledge and confidence they need to make informed choices at the ballot box,” said Rev. Fr. Benedict Onwugbenu, the director of the JDPC Benin. “We believe that an informed and engaged citizenry is the foundation of a vibrant democracy.”
The educational materials distributed by JDPC Benin cover a wide range of topics, including permanent voters card collection, the electoral calendar, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
In addition to the IEC materials distributed, JDPC also organized a series of one-on-one sensitization and dialogues, where market women can engage directly with the organization’s representatives and raise their concerns and questions.
“The feedback received from the people of Benin City has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Rev. Fr. Benedict. “They are eager to learn more about the electoral process and to participate in shaping the future of our state.”
One of the key focus areas of JDPC Benin voter education efforts has been the issue of vote buying. The organization has been working closely with stakeholders, community leaders to raise awareness about the importance of not selling your vote and also maintaining a peaceful electoral environment.
“We cannot afford to have a repeat of the violence and chaos that have marred previous elections,” said Rev. Fr. Benedict. “By educating the people about their rights, the consequences of vote buying and electoral violence, we hope to create an atmosphere of trust and cooperation that will allow for a free and fair election.”
As the general elections draw closer, the JDPC Benin work in Benin City will only become more critical. The organization’s commitment to empowering the electorate and promoting democratic values serves as an inspiration to all who believe in the power of an informed and engaged society.
