As part of the ongoing outreach and commitment to promoting Human Dignity and Social Justice, Justice Development and Peace Centre (JDPC) Benin participated in the 2025 Cathedraticum across the three deaneries in the Archdiocese of Benin City i.e Iguobazuwa, Abudu, and Benin City.
The purpose of JDPC’s presence was to mobilize and collect food items donated by catholic faithful for onward distribution to inmates in the four correctional facilities in Edo South Senatorial District of Edo State.
Summary of Food Items Collected
Across all three deaneries, the JDPC Benin collected the following:
• Bags of Garri
• Gallons of Palm Oil
• Tubers of Yam
• Bunches of Plantains.
These items were sorted and prepared for distribution to four correctional centers in Benin City.
Distribution to Correctional Facilities The food items were equitably distributed by JDPC Benin to the following prisons:
1. Oko Correctional Centre: The JDPC team delivered food items directly to prison officials at Oko Correctional Centre at Oko-Ogba airport road Benin City.
2. Benin Correctional Centre (Sapele Road): At this facility, JDPC Benin handed over a good portion of the food items to the administration. The distribution was orderly and well received.
3. Juvenile Correctional Centre, Ugbekun: Special consideration was given to the juveniles, with nutritious items like yams and plantains prioritized. The gesture was well received, and the young inmates expressed thanks through their caretakers
4. Open Prison (Farm Prison): Known popularly as the “Farm Prison,” this correctional facility also benefitted from the outreach. The prison management commended JDPC Benin for always remembering them.
The inmates expressed their gratitude, and the prison authorities appreciated the continued support from the Archbishop and the Catholic Archdocese of Benin City at large.
